Turkey's New Earthquake Hazard Map is Published

Turkey Earthquake Regions Map which came into effect in 1966 has been updated by the Presidency of Earthquake Directorate of AFAD and published in the Official Gazette on March 18, 2018 with issue no 30364. The new map will enter into force on January 1, 2019.

The new map is prepared with massive and detailed data taking into account the most recent earthquake source parameters, earthquake catalogs and new generation mathematical methods. Unlike the previous map, the new map shows the largest ground acceleration values rather than earthquake zones and replaces the “earthquake zone” concept.

The earthquake hazard map is not a RISK map. It is necessary to know the exposure situation of constructions and population at the time of an earthquake, determine economic damages and effect of possible earthquakes in the region and prepare a map showing the casualties and damage outcome by calculating all those in order to turn this hazard map into a RISK map.

The new map was prepared as a part of project entitled “Update of Turkey’s Seismic Hazard Map” supported by the AFAD National Earthquake Research Program (UDAP) and carried out in cooperation with public and private universities.
