JONNY LIEBECK//CONTEMPORARY JAZZ MEETS ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC

Join us for our regular Grow Roots series on selected Wednesdays of the month, where we showcase the best, underexposed talent London has to offer. This week, Jazz pianist and composer Jonny Liebeck returns to Grow following his successful album launch last summer.

Jazz pianist and composer Jonny Liebeck returns to Grow following his album launch last summer where he will be performing some new work inspired by contemporary jazz as well as his passion for electronic dance music genres such as Jungle, Breakbeat and Deep House. Along with a few tunes from his albums 'The Next Chapter' and 'Mellow Mind' expect a fusion of soulful jazz harmony, lyrical guitar melodies, groovy basslines and intricate breakbeats.

Born and raised in West London, Jonny started his musical life playing the Church Organ at Mass every Sunday from the age of 13. During his late teen years, although progressing rapidly as an organist, Jonny started to teach himself jazz piano.

A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music & Trinity Laban, Jonny gigs all over London and has performed at many London venues including the Southbank Centre (Purcell Room), Royal Albert Hall, Pizza Express, The Vortex, Rich Mix, Toulouse Lautrec, Bush Hall, The Hootananny and the CLF Art Lounge. Furthermore, he has played alongside Cuban Jazz legend Omar Puente & Soul legend Mica Paris at The Round Chapel in Clapton.

An active composer, Jonny released his second album 'The Next Chapter' last summer as a follow-up to his debut album 'Mellow Mind' in 2020 and 2 EP's 'A Message Through Sound' & 'New Days and Past Times'. The album features a combination of emotive solo piano compositions and band compositions. He is currently working on a new EP to be recorded this summer.

Drawing from his roots in classical and jazz music, Jonny's sound is also heavily influenced by genres such as Jazz Funk, Jungle & Breakbeat, and he blends these influences together in his writing, creating a very interesting and unique sound.

The Band

Jonny Liebeck (Keyboard)

Owen Snider (Guitar) - A graduate of Trinity Laban, studying under Hannes Riepler and Mike Outram, Owen performs in London and across the world with artists spanning a wide range of genres and is currently focused on writing music for an album and gigging across London and the UK.

Tom Mason (Bass) – A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music & Boston Conservatory, Tom has performed and toured with a wide range of artists including Questlove, Lizz Wright, Mark Ronson, Jamie Cullum, Daymé Arocena and Angelique Kidjo. COMPOUND CHEMISTRY ALBUM LAUNCH + SEVDE // PROGRESSIVE JAZZ MEETS SUFI SOUNDS // ROOTS // LIVE

Join us for our next instalment of ROOTS; a live music series featuring the most diverse and unique underexposed talent London has to offer, set to spice up your mid-week, for only 5 pounds a ticket.

On Wednesday the 17th of April we bring you an unforgettable evening of sonic exploration, where two worlds of jazz converge, featuring Compound Chemistry and Sevde, two bands who seamlessly fuse tradition with innovation. That’s not all - Compound Chemistry will be releasing their album THE NEXT DAY, so our event offers you the chance to be among the first to experience their album, first-hand.

Line Up:

Compound Chemistry is a fusion project whose name does justice to the music they make. A product of divergent music influences and backgrounds, this is where jazz and prog music meet and create their own identity. After over a year of shows in Portugal and The UK, the trio are releasing their debut album on April 18th and have a European tour scheduled from June 23rd to July. Compound Chemistry is inspired by bands and artists such as George Benson, Daft Punk, Led Zeppelin and Tigran Hamasyan and can be seen as the perfect son of Hiromi and Julian.

The album: ‘Compound Chemistry’ is an 8-track record that spans genres from prog metal to fusion jazz. With 7 original songs and 1 cover of ‘Walk On By’ by Isaac Hayes, the entire album takes the listener on a mind-puzzling trip and a journey of emotions. Released on April 18th.

Sevde offers a unique experience, bringing soulful sounds from Istanbul to the vibrant Jazz scene in London. She aims to fuse culturally different music and create a unique intertwining musical experience for her audience, by creating jazz phrases combined with the melodies of the Sufi world and connecting with her audience.

Sevde spendt most of her time growing up in Ankara and Istanbul. After moving to London at 15, she was immersed in a cosmopolitan music scene. She developed an interest in modern jazz and wanted to combine her Turkish-influenced background with the London jazz scene. She is now on her journey to fuse Turkish and Jazz, embodying spirituality and exploring inner conflict, duality and emotional vulnerability with her audience. She plays alongside Sam Clarke on bass, and Thomas Dunk on drums.

Experience a world of flavours at Grow! We’re proud to partner with esteemed breweries, St Austell and Signature Brewery, to bring you an exceptional range of Draft Beers. But that’s not all - we also serve vibrant Organic Wines and Prosecco that are sure to delight your palate.

WAH WAH LIVE // ILLAJOY // JAZZ // RNB // SOUL // HOUSE

Independent soulful record label Wah Wah 45s return to Grow for another night of eclectic musical goodness, featuring legendary DJs and up-and-coming live musicians.

ILLAJOY are a four-piece band based in South London who fuse genres such as Soul, RnB and Jazz into their own unique style.

So far they have accomplished the successful release of two singles, including ‘Can’t Wait To Fall In Love Again’ and ‘Something Over Nothing’.

Working as a collective, ILLAJOY exude a level of complexity within their song writing and composition that reflect them as individuals, surprising new audiences with a soulful and energetic stage presence which successfully entices you back for more.

Handson Family are beloved veterans of the black music scene. Husband and wife team Chris and Cyndi have been promoting and DJing at parties in South London and beyond for over twenty years, more recently finding themselves running stages and playing guest DJ sets at festivals like Gilles Peterson’s We Out Here and Italian future jazz event Jazz: Re:Found.

CHICHA POR FAVOR W/ LOKANDES & PASKAL ROUGH & TOUGH

The record label that specialises in reissues of Peruvian music, Ritmo del Barrio and Grow Hackney present “Chicha Por Favor” an excursion into Peruvian Cumbia, also known as Chicha!!

£6 entry on the door from 9pm

Featuring..

LOKANDES

Lokandes are fronted by whirldwind musical maestro Kanti Qena and related their name to the combination of two words: 'Crazy' and 'Andes' which represents the intention of their music: Crazy music from the Andes. The project aims to create alternative music, taking the melodies and energy of Andean music and bringing it up to date; creating a fusion of traditional roots and Afro-Andean rhythms with other contemporary genres such as Reggae, Cumbia, Ska, Jazz, Son, Rumba Folk and funky Latin rhythms.

They unite musicians and instruments from Peru, Bolivia, Spain, France, China, Chile and the UK, and set their highly original music, alongside socially conscious lyrics and a super-tight rhythm section bringing awareness to Latin-American and worldwide cultures with their music.

Paskal Rough & Tough (Cool Breeze)

Paskal is a music enthusiast and record collector of variegated music genres, with a main focus on the vintage sounds of the 60s and 70s from Jamaica, the Caribbean and Latin America. He also runs “Cool Breeze” is a music night focused on the vintage sounds of the American tropics travelling restlessly across the Caribbeans islands and the Latin American borders. A musical journey from the Peruvian Andes to the Colombian coasts, listening the pungent lyrics of the calypsonians from Panama and feeling the African inspired drums of the French Antilles, soaking the low frequencies of the Jamaican bass lines and dancing at the hypnotic melodies of the Mexican accordions... and beyond.

Ritmo del Barrio

Independent record label based in London, UK, Ritmo del Barrio has been focused on the exploration of vintage Latin American music with a special attention to Peruvian Cumbia, also known as Chicha.

Founded in 2021, RDB reissues feature Peruvian artists of the caliber of Cuarteto Universal, Los Shapis, Julio Mau y Los Imbatibles and Los Dexters de Uchiza; collaborating and working together with historical peruvian labels like Discos Horóscopo, Music Shop Peru’ and Sono Radio

DEEPDIG W/ MILLIE MCKEE // SOULFUL, SPIRITUAL GROOVES

After our roadblock launch of the Deepdig series with Saachi and the follow up with NTS resident DJ Martha, we return with rising selector, Millie McKee on Feb 17 for an extended set!

Millie McKee is an ever-growing digger and music selector based in Bristol, UK. Her relentless, no-bounds approach to music has resulted in an impressive knowledge and understanding of jazz, rock, dub, psychedelia, and more.

The recent success of her My Analog Journal mix has enchanted the world (with over 3 million views!) with her eclectic, open hearted style. Her 12 month residency at the legendary Love Inn in Bristol, consisting of a 7 hour set every month, has proven her abilities in curation, flow, and doing something different in a space that is typically dominated by electronic music.

A bedroom collector for 7+ years, but only DJing for 2 years, she's already graced the stages of Love Saves the Day, Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party and more, as well as holding down regular shows at London's and Bristol's most progressive underground venues. Her philosophy towards DJing resides in a deep, quasi-spiritual soulfulness, marked by the unexpected and tied together with organic seams

DeepDig is a night curated by Grow, that brings some of our favourite DJs and producers to play the sets that they don’t usually get to play at bigger venues and festivals. Expect lengthy, no holds barred DJ sets in intimate settings, where they have free reign to take the crowd in whatever direction they like.

Previous guests for Deepdig in it’s current & past form include Haseeb Iqbal, DJ Amir, Saachi, Martha, K15, Laani, My Analog Journal & Thristian.

Warm up on the night comes from Grow favourite, Mingulitka

Mingulitka is a Ukrainian DJ and musician, who brings a fusion of global sounds to London's music scene. She has a broad range of musical influences and loves experimenting with different sounds and styles, from jazz to electro.

Mingulitka is a Voices Radio resident, has played at EuroFestival Rave UKraine in Liverpool, Brixton Radio, AAJA, Tilos Radio (Budapest), and has also performed at various clubs and venues across Ukraine, the US, and Hungary.
