It's the movies' biggest night, British style! The BAFTA Awards 2023—technically the EE BAFTA Film Awards—are being held at the Southbank Centre's Royal Festival Hall, a 2,700-capacity venue that sits along the River Thames. BAFTA is an acronym for British Academy of Film and Television Arts, if you were wondering, and EE is their sponsor, a mobile network and internet service provider. We bring this up because EE used to stand for Everything Everywhere (no, we're not kidding) so maybe this is a good sign for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, the directing unit knows as Daniels, and others involved in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Or it could just be a coincidence.
This is the 76th BAFTA ceremony, and what is essentially the British equivalent to the Academy Awards. The organization celebrates the best in cinema, with special categories exclusively for British productions. They are Outstanding British Film; Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer; British Short Animation; and British Short Film. There's also the EE BAFTA Rising Star award, a relatively new prize that began in 2005, that tends to go to British talent. The three that have defied this are French actress Eva Green and Americans Shia LaBeouf and Kristen Stewart. This year's nominees are all based in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
The film with the most nominations is the German-language adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's 1928 novel All Quiet on the Western Front, with 14. Some felt that this good showing secured its placement in the Best Picture race at the Oscars. The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All At Once followed with 10 nominations each.
Highlights this year will include a special tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II from Dame Helen Mirren, and appearances by Prince William and Kate Middleton for the first time since 2020. Among Prince William's titles is president of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
As winners are announced, this list of nominees will be adjusted.
